Mizoram's celebrated ethic of selfless service is being taught, tested and questioned in a changing state.
Tlawmngaihna — the Mizo ethic of selfless, ungrudging service — is the closest thing Mizoram has to a civic religion: it explains the state’s volunteer fire brigades, its community labour and its hospitality.
Sociologists note the virtue is being tested by the market economy, while schools argue it should be part of the curriculum.
Its defenders are philosophical: ‘You cannot teach tlawmngaihna. You can only be shamed by it.’
