The Mizoram Aizawl–Lunglei highway: the road that splits the state’s future

The four-lane project through the state's landslide-prone southern hills is engineering's toughest local exam.

The four-lane highway that will connect Aizawl to Lunglei is the most ambitious road project in Mizoram’s history — and it is being carved through terrain that routinely defeats roads.

Engineers have redesigned entire sections after slides, using tunnel sections and elevated decks where cut-and-fill would not hold.

The project’s progress is a running national test case: can India build big in the most fragile hills it has?
